In comics and art more broadly, motion lines (also known as movement lines, action lines, speed lines, [1] or zip ribbons) are the abstract lines that appear behind a moving object or person, parallel to its direction of movement, to make it appear as if it is moving quickly.
Speed lines: Often in action sequences, the background will possess an overlay of neatly ruled lines to portray direction of movements. Speed lines can also be applied to characters as a way to emphasize the motion of their bodies [ D 3 ] : 14 (limbs in particular).
Some would have its use restricted only to long-form narratives, while at the other extreme are people who use it as a synonym for "comics" or "comic book". [ 4 ] [ 48 ] [ 49 ] Others again define it as a book with a square-bound spine, even if it is a collection of short strips. [ 50 ]

Line is one of the main components of design including principles such as shape, color, texture, value, perspective, and form. Lines can appear in many different forms some examples may be straight or curved; continuous or dotted; thick or thin; and real and implied. Line can be used to create structure and tone in illustrations and other artworks.
