Because it is smaller and shallower than many other Finger Lakes, its waters warm up much more quickly, so swimming, water-skiing, and boating are popular.
Approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Globe Hotel Corners, NY 38A turns to follow a more northwesterly routing, matching the curvature of the river valley. The valley ends at the Cayuga–Onondaga County line, where NY 38A enters an area of flats situated in between Owasco Lake and Skaneateles Lake.
It lies between Skaneateles Lake and Owasco Lake. Excluding its termini, there are only two junctions with other roadways along the entire route. NY 359 was assigned in the early 1940s and was part of the original NY 26 from 1924 to 1930.
The flats give way to the lake in Cascade, a hamlet in the town of Venice, at which point NY 38 begins to climb up the western edge of the lake valley. It reaches the lip of the valley 2 miles (3.2 km) later in the town of Scipio. [5] For the next 2.5 miles (4.0 km), the route passes by open fields as it overlooks the lake to the east.
