The lake is formed by Lopez Dam on Arroyo Grande Creek, 9 mi (14 km) upstream from the Pacific Ocean. The creek drains about 60 sq mi (160 km 2 ) above the dam and 90 sq mi (230 km 2 ) below. The dam was built in 1969 (56 years ago) ( 1969 ) and is operated by the San Luis Obispo County Flood Control and Water Conservation District.
Wittenberg and Lopez Canyon Creeks both originate in the Los Padres National Forest and flow into the lake from the north. [8] The creek turns southwest below Lopez Dam, where it enters the Arroyo Grande Valley. It flows through Biddle Regional Park and is joined from the left by Tar Springs Creek, just above the city of Arroyo Grande. [9]
Rancho Arroyo Grande was a 4,437-acre (17.96 km 2) Mexican land grant in present day San Luis Obispo County, California given in 1842 by Governor Juan Alvarado to Zeferino Carlón. [1] The grant extended along Arroyo Grande Creek east of present day Arroyo Grande. Much of the grant is now covered by Lopez Lake. [2] [3]
The principal stream in the area is the Arroyo Grande Creek which meanders approximately 12 miles (19 km) in a southwesterly direction from the spillway of Lopez Lake to the Pacific Ocean. The viticultural area includes substantially all the drainage of the Arroyo Grande Creek including the (upper) Arroyo Grande Creek.

The Arroyo Campground is located off Live Oak Canyon Road and includes 79 campsites, including eight large group campsites and five horse camping sites.
