Morus rubra, commonly known as the red mulberry, is a species of mulberry native to eastern and central North America. It is found from Ontario , Minnesota , and Vermont south to southern Florida , and west as far as southeastern South Dakota , Nebraska , Kansas , and central Texas .
Rubus is a large and diverse genus of flowering plants in the rose family, Rosaceae, subfamily Rosoideae, commonly known as brambles. [3] [4] [5] Fruits of various species are known as raspberries, blackberries, dewberries, and bristleberries.
Morus nigra is a deciduous tree growing to 12 metres (39 feet) tall by 15 m (49 ft) broad. The leaves are 10–20 centimetres (4–8 inches) long by 6–10 cm (2–4 in) broad – up to 23 cm (9 in) long on vigorous shoots, downy on the underside, the upper surface rough with very short, stiff hairs.
One common scenario is converting a problematic male mulberry tree to an allergy-free female tree, by grafting all-female mulberry tree scions to a male mulberry that has been pruned back to the trunk. Rubus glaucus, commonly known as mora de Castilla or Andean raspberry, is a species of blackberry found in Latin America from Mexico to Bolivia, including the northern and central Andes.
Blackberries are full of antioxidants, fiber and vitamins, which can protect from inflammation, heart disease, cancer, and boost brain health.
Mulberry can be grown up to 4,000 m (13,000 ft) above sea level. Mulberry blooms well in warm, rich, fertile, well-drained, loamy to clayey soils, porous with strong moisture-holding ability. The optimal soil pH range is 6.2–6.8. Because mulberry is a hardy crop, the soil moisture can be used to a greater extent by these plants.
A prickle-free mutation of the loganberry, the 'American Thornless', was developed in 1933. The tayberry is a similar raspberry-blackberry hybrid. The 'Phenomenal' berry or 'Burbank's Logan', developed by Luther Burbank in 1905, is also a raspberry-blackberry hybrid, but is a second-generation cross (i.e., two first-generation crosses between ...
