Kahului (Hawaiian pronunciation: [kəhuˈluwi]) is an unincorporated community and a census-designated place (CDP) in Maui County in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It hosts the county's main airport ( Kahului Airport ), a deep-draft harbor, light industrial areas, and commercial shopping centers.
Kanahā Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary (KPSWS) is a 208-acre wetland in Kahului on the island of Maui, Hawaiʻi. [1] The brackish-water sanctuary, situated between the ocean, an urban and commercial area, and Kahului International Airport, is home to many native plant and animal species, including over 100 native plants and invertebrate species, and 86 bird species.
In addition, or perhaps overlapping, are five U.S. National Park Service areas of historic orientation in Hawaii. [5] Of these, the USS Arizona Memorial, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, Kalaupapa National Historical Park, and Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site are also National Historic Landmarks and are listed above.
The gardens were established in 1976 by Rene Sylva [1] within a coastal dune system, and are primarily focused on conserving native Hawaiian plants of the dry forest and coastal areas of Maui Nui (Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe). The gardens also contain a good collection of Polynesian-introduced plants.
