The Hunterian is a complex of museums located in and operated by the University of Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland.It is the oldest museum in Scotland. [1] It covers the Hunterian Museum, the Hunterian Art Gallery, the Mackintosh House, the Zoology Museum and the Anatomy Museum, which are all located in various buildings on the main campus of the university in the west end of Glasgow.
The Hunterian Collection is one of the best-known collections of the University of Glasgow and is cared for by the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery and Glasgow University Library. It contains 650 manuscripts and some 10,000 printed books, [ 1 ] 30,000 coins and 15,000 anatomical and natural history specimens.
John Young FGS (July 1823 – 13 March 1900) was a Scottish geologist, palaeontologist and a curator at the Hunterian Museum.He was a vice-president of the Glasgow Geological Society and of the Natural History Society of Glasgow, and was awarded both life membership of the Geological Society of London and money from their Murchison Medal Fund.
From 1911 he was a demonstrator in geology at Glasgow University. There he began assisting Prof John Walter Gregory at the university's Hunterian Museum and replaced him as curator in 1914. He was absent for war duties 1916–1917, serving in the Royal Garrison Artillery until he was invalided out.
The Hunterian Museum is a member of The London Museums of Health & Medicine group, and displays thousands of anatomical specimens, including the Evelyn tables, instruments belonging to Joseph Lister, and the skeleton of the "Irish giant" Charles Byrne (procured against Byrne's dying wishes), surgical equipment, and paintings and sculptures about medical individuals and medicine.

The Hunterian Club was a Scottish literary and text publication society, founded in Glasgow in 1871. [1]The club was founded for "the reproduction of the works of Scottish writers of Elizabethan times" [2] and described itself as a "reprinting club", modelled on the Maitland Club. [3]
