The people who gushed over Cabin in the Woods (speaking in generalities here) were people who love and understand horror movies. Horror movies have essentially been the same thing for the last few decades: 5 teenagers go to a cabin in the woods and some monster comes and kills everyone off except for the "final girl" who manages to escape.
For the twist changing the entire trajectory and vibe of a film it HAS to be from dusk till dawn, still grateful my dad made me watch it with no idea what happens in the second act because that was a HELL of a twist and the movie from the twists reveal on is tonally and thematically different but is somehow a flawless transition that isn't jarring
Redditors had mixed opinions on Cabin in the Woods. Some praised the movie for its clever premise, black comedy, and the way it redeemed horror tropes, while others criticized it for being too silly, forgettable, and not a true horror movie. Some suggested potential sequel ideas, while others disagreed with the ending and the characters' decisions.
I first saw Cabin in the Woods with a friend and we didn't know anything about it. Just that it was an r rated horror movie. It was called Cabin in the Woods so so we expected it to be a pretty typical horror movie. From the very beginning it isn't. And it's a lot of fun if you don't know what you're in for.
The thing is, the movie is a satire of the horror genre. It's meant to really exaggerate the elements of horror films and not take itself too seriously. To me the ending was perfect, because at the end of a serious horror movie what you suggested is exactly what would happen.
Equinox is the movie that CLEARLY influenced Evil Dead even though Raimi has never admitted to seeing it beforehand. Evil Dead is what really set off the Cabin in the Woods device though. There may have been movies with that setting, but it's 100% Evil Dead that kickstarted it
The Hallow (It might qualify as an old wooden shack in the woods, not a cabin, but it's close) The Final Girls (Meta comedy horror inspired by films like Friday the 13th) And some honorable mentions: The Witch (takes place in a small settlement in the woods) It Comes at Night (takes place in an outpost in the woods)
Very similar to Cabin in the Woods where it's self-aware. Great score, amazing slo-mo shots to cream over, great cast, acting, and even has a good emotional tone to the entire thing, so it's not all just fun and games!
While I do have a nostalgic soft spot for Kung Pow, my preference isn't for satirical movies that are absurdly dumb, like the Scary Movie films. I also think I enjoyed the shift in Cabin in the Woods. So I wouldn't mind suggestions along those lines, either.
If you are one of those people that completely avoids the kind of movies cabin is trying to make fun of, a lot of the movie's meta-referential humor will be completely lost; or just be an exercise in preaching to the choir. Here's the plot synopsis: A group of organized cthulu-ian cultists organize ritualistic killings to appease old gods.
