Major Dad is an American sitcom television series created by Richard C. Okie and John G. Stephens, developed by Earl Pomerantz, that originally ran from September 17, 1989, to May 17, 1993, on CBS, starring Gerald McRaney as Major John D. MacGillis and Shanna Reed as his wife Polly.
McRaney is best known as one of the stars of the television shows Simon & Simon, Major Dad, Promised Land and House of Cards. He most recently starred as Admiral Hollace Kilbride on NCIS: Los Angeles. He was a series regular in the first season of the CBS drama series Jericho and the final season of the HBO series Deadwood.
The Major sees the boy's mother acts like a Stepford wife, so he asks Polly's help in getting her to open up. In a subplot, Lt. Holowachuk tries to fill his basketball team but finds complications when General Craig wants to play — and no one wants to guard him because he is the general.
