Alfred Tarski (/ ˈ t ɑːr s k i /, born Alfred Teitelbaum; [1] [2] [3] January 14, 1901 – October 26, 1983) was a Polish-American [4] logician and mathematician. [5] A prolific author best known for his work on model theory, metamathematics, and algebraic logic, he also contributed to abstract algebra, topology, geometry, measure theory, mathematical logic, set theory, and analytic philosophy.
The Age of Enlightenment was a broad philosophical movement in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The traditional theological-political system that placed Scripture at the center, with religious authorities and monarchies claiming and enforcing their power by divine right, was challenged and overturned in the realm of ideas.
Tarski, the most prominent member of the Lwów–Warsaw School, has been ranked as one of the four greatest logicians of all time, along with Aristotle, Gottlob Frege, and Kurt Gödel. [12] [13] [14] The school's work was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. [10]
