Maasai Mara, also sometimes spelt Masai Mara and locally known simply as The Mara, is a large national game reserve in Narok, Kenya, contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is named in honour of the Maasai people , [ 2 ] the ancestral inhabitants of the area, who migrated to the area from the Nile Basin.
Serengeti National Park forms a Lion Conservation Unit since 2005 together with Maasai Mara National Reserve. [9] More than 3,000 lions live in this ecosystem. [10] The population density of the African leopard is estimated at 5.41 individuals per 100 km 2 (14.0 per 100 sq miles) in the dry season. [11]
The Maasai are an indigenous and prominent tribe in the area. Past ethnic clashes have occurred between the Maasai and the surrounding tribes due to land issues (e.g., cattle raiding). It is the divisional headquarters of the former Kilgoris Division (currently Trans-Mara West sub-County under the devolved administration system).
The Mara Triangle is one third of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with an area of 510 km 2.It has two natural borders and one political; to the southwest is the Tanzania/Serengeti border, to the east is the Mara River, and to the northwest is the Oldoinyio Escarpment (also called Oloololo or Siria Escarpment).

Mara Region is known for being the home of Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and also the birth place of Tanzania's founding father Julius Nyerere. Under British colonial occupation, the Mara Region was a district called the Lake Province, which became the Lake Region after independence in 1961.
