With 53,950 Sikhs living in the East Midlands at the 2021 census (1.1% of the region's population), the area is home to the fourth-largest Sikh community in the UK. The five East Midlands local authorities with the highest Sikh population are Leicester (16,451), Derby (9,762), Oadby and Wigston (4,342), Nottingham (4,110), and Blaby (2,927).
The permanent arrival of Sikhism in England is dated to 1850 A.D. with the arrival of Maharajah Duleep Singh (last ruler of the Sikh Empire). The first Sikh place of worship, called a Gurdwara, was opened in 1911 in London and this was partly funded by the Maharaja of Patiala. [4]

It was built primarily to serve the 7,000 Sikhs living in the Leamington and Warwick area. [5] The £11 million cost of construction was met entirely by the Sikh community. [6] Construction began in March 2008 by the local building contractors AC Lloyd, [5] with building works taking 18 months. It was formally opened on 25 October 2009. [7]
