The Martin B-57 Canberra is an American-built, twin-engined tactical bomber and reconnaissance aircraft that entered service with the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1953. The B-57 is a license-built version of the British English Electric Canberra , manufactured by the Glenn L. Martin Company .
The remainder were re-designated WB-57F in 1968. [citation needed] Four of the survivors were subsequently used by NASA for high-altitude atmospheric research. The others were retired from 1972 to 1974 and placed in storage. [citation needed] As of 2024, three WB-57Fs are the only B-57 aircraft model still flying, in service with NASA. [1]
21 produced. Developed from some RB-57As, RB-57Bs, and RB-57Ds in 1963 with newer engines and wider wings. Used for strategic reconnaissance. Transferred to Air Weather Service as WB-57Fs, 1968 Two WB-57Fs are the only B-57 aircraft model still flyable and in service (NASA, 2011).
An even larger B-57 reconnaissance version was the 122 feet (37 m) wingspan RB-57F. Beginning in 1963, General Dynamics converted 21 B-57 airframes (four of them RB-57Ds) into RB-57Fs. These aircraft performed missions similar to the RB-57D, and the last USAF-operated RB-57F was retired in the early 1970s. [1]
Inactivated in 1958 as part of the phaseout of the WB-50s and development of faster jet aircraft for the long-range intelligence mission. Reactivated in 1962 at Kirtland Air Force Base , New Mexico. Beginning in 1963 began to be equipped with new high-altitude reconnaissance Martin RB-57F Canberra aircraft modified for high altitude, long range ...
NASA WB-57 as BACN Aircraft, typically above 55,000 feet. The BACN prototype was originally developed and tested in 2005–2008 on the NASA WB-57 high altitude test aircraft during Joint Expeditionary Force Experiments and other experimentation venues. The last two flying WB-57s were used for this mission in Afghanistan. [12]
