Florida State University traces the start of its athletic program to 1902, when Florida State College played the first of its three seasons. [8] From 1902 to 1904, the institution then known as Florida State College fielded a varsity football team called "The Eleven" that played other teams. [9] The Florida State players wore gold uniforms. [10]
FSU vacated their appearance in the 2006 Emerald Bowl vs. UCLA. Florida State maintains a record of 29–18–3 record in bowl games. The Seminoles played in 36 consecutive bowl games from 1982-2017.

Both the University of Florida and Florida State College for Women became coeducational, and the Tallahassee institution changed its name to "Florida State University" (FSU). FSU re-established its football program in 1947 , and it soon became a founding member of the non- scholarship Dixie Conference .

The Seminoles played their home games at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, and competed as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They were led by head coach Mike Norvell, in his second season.
