It appeared in production on the 1974 Yamaha YZ-250, a model which is still in production, making it Yamaha's longest continuous model and name. Both motorcycles have a 779 cc inline-four engine, derived from the 998 cc FZ1 engine, [4] but with a bore reduced from 77 to 68 mm (3.0 to 2.7 in), and the same stroke of 53.6 mm (2.11 in).
