Princess Marie Auguste with her younger brothers Prince Joachim Ernst and Prince Eugen in 1910. On 10 June 1898, Marie-Auguste was born in Ballenstedt, Anhalt, Germany, to the then Prince Eduard of Anhalt and his wife Princess Louise Charlotte of Saxe-Altenburg.
In 1980, Lichtenberg was adopted by Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt (1898–1983), then in her 80s. [1] Upon adoption, Lichtenberg's name became "Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt" – "Prinz" (Prince) is part of the legal surname in Germany and not a princely title according to modern German law. [8]
When they married, she was given the title Princess von Anhalt, Duchess of Saxony. It was later revealed that von Anhalt only had the title from an adult adoption by Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt.

On 11 March 1916 in Berlin, Joachim married Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt (10 June 1898 – 22 May 1983), the daughter of Eduard, Duke of Anhalt and his wife Princess Luise of Saxe-Altenburg (daughter of Prince Moritz of Saxe-Altenburg). He and Marie-Auguste had been engaged since 14 October of the previous year.
Eduard was born at Schloss Ballenstedt in Ballenstedt, in what is now the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, the youngest of the five children of the last reigning Duke of Anhalt, Joachim Ernst, and of his second wife Editha "Edda" Charlotte Wilhelmine Marwitz, who allegedly paid 10,000 marks to Bertha von Stephani to improve her social standing by adult adoption.
