Bristow is located in northern Oklahoma, just south of the geographic center of Creek County.According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.3 km 2), of which 3.6 square miles (9.2 km 2) is land and 0.08 square miles (0.2 km 2), or 1.66%, is water.
The present incarnation of SH-16 first appeared on Oklahoma's state highway map in 1937 as a gravel highway connecting Bristow to Beggs. [3] This would be SH-16's extent for nearly two decades. This section of the highway was first paved in 1950. [4] SH-16 was not extended beyond Beggs until 1954, when it was extended east to US-62 and US-64.

East of Okfuskee, the highway enters Okmulgee County. In Okmulgee County, SH-56 skirts the northern edge of Okmulgee Lake and serves Dripping Springs State Park. East of the lake, it passes through Okmulgee Wildlife Refuge and Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge. [4] It then enters the city of Okmulgee. There, SH-56 comes to an end at US-75.

The 25 miles (40 km) between US-62 and the SH-16 junction in Bristow is very rural, with no settlements of any size. At Bristow, SH-48 joins SH-16 and SH-66 for a short three-route concurrency through town. SH-16 branches off just north of downtown Bristow, and SH-48/SH-66 intersect with I-44/Turner Turnpike at Bristow's northern edge.
US-75 ALT largely follows the route of the old US-75 before the "Okmulgee Beeline", the expressway/freeway between Okmulgee and Tulsa, was built. On August 28, 1959, the US-75 name was moved onto the new highway, and US-75 ALT was designated for the old highway. [1]
