"The song's title refers not to the chemical ether, but to the mythical element (also known as aether or quintessence) that the spirit or soul is said to be made of ("that ether/that shit that make your soul burn slow")." I'm not saying this isn't true, but I'm pretty sure Nas is referring to the chemical ether due to its high flammability.
