Detroit Lakes is a city and the county seat of Becker County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 9,869 at the 2020 census . [ 4 ] Its unofficial population during summer months is much higher, estimated by citizens to peak at 13,000 midsummers, due to seasonal residents and tourists.
In 2014, a Great Pyrenees dog named Duke [a] won the annual election for the ceremonial mayorship of Cormorant. Twelve votes were cast. [5] He won his fourth consecutive term in May 2017. [6] Mayor Duke retired in 2018, [7] and passed away in 2019. [8]
In 1884, Detroit Lakes had many businesses, including two hotels, a bank, a newspaper, and an opera house. The first courthouse was built that year. In 1885, the first county fire department was constructed. In 1903, the Soo Line Railroad built a line through the county. Detroit Lakes hosts a park dedicated to the Grand Army of the Republic.
As of the census [1] of 2000, there were 2,359 people, 899 households, and 692 families residing in the township. The population density was 91.0 inhabitants per square mile (35.1/km 2).

Big Cormorant Lake is located in northwestern Minnesota's Becker County, about an hour's drive due east of the Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota metropolitan area. Public access boat ramps are located on the northeast and west sides of the Lake. The lake was named after the cormorant, a common bird species in the region. [1]
