Barva Volcano is an andesitic stratovolcano complex in central Costa Rica, 22 km north of San José, in Heredia Province.On the eastern side of the mountain is a lake in what was the volcanic crater, called "Laguna de Barva", and on the western side it has three hills on the top which are called "Las Tres Marías". The highest part of Purabá is on the lower slopes of the Barva Massif, also known as Barva Volcano, at 2.400 metres (7.87 ft) above sea level. [11] [12] The lowest part, at San Juan, is at 1.000 metre (3.281 ft) above sea level. [11] The Barva volcanic massif is part of a mountain range which includes volcanic cones.
Barva has an area of 53.8 km 2 [5] and an elevation of 1,241 metres. [1]The elongated canton climbs from the city of Barva on the outskirts of the capital city of Heredia up the slopes of the dormant Barva Volcano, with the mountain's summit serving as its northern boundary.
Unlike the more popular Costa Rican parks, such as Poás Volcano National Park and Manuel Antonio National Park, Braulio Carrillo National Park is relatively unmaintained and untravelled. Three main ranger stations serve the park. Two of them, Quebrada Gonzales and Barva, provide sanitary facilities and drinking water for visitors.

The land in the valley is a relative plain, despite being surrounded by several mountains and volcanoes, the latter part of the Central Range. The Varablanca head city is located between Poas Volcano and Barva Volcano in the Heredia Province of Costa Rica. It is an important cross-road location for all major traffic connecting the northern parts of Costa Rica, especially the Sarapiqui River delta area with the major population area of the San Jose Central Valley.
