The language C* adds to C a "domain" data type and a selection statement for parallel execution in domains. For the CM-2 models the C* compiler translated the code into serial C, calling PARIS (Parallel Instruction Set) functions, and passed the resulting code to the front end computer's native compiler.
In theoretical computer science and formal language theory, a regular language is said to be star-free if it can be described by a regular expression constructed from the letters of the alphabet, the empty word, the empty set symbol, all boolean operators – including complementation – and concatenation but no Kleene star. [1]
the pattern language L(xx) is not context-free (hence neither regular nor finite) due to the pumping lemma; the finite (hence also regular and context-free) language { 01, 10 } is not a pattern language. Each singleton language is trivially a pattern language, generated by a pattern without variables.
This has led to a nomenclature where the term regular expression has different meanings in formal language theory and pattern matching. For this reason, some people have taken to using the term regex, regexp, or simply pattern to describe the latter. Larry Wall, author of the Perl programming language, writes in an essay about the design of Raku:
This makes the program harder to read and maintain. Furthermore, it can become difficult to change the program, since any change may affect code in several other classes. With the mediator pattern, communication between objects is encapsulated within a mediator object. Objects no longer communicate directly with each other, but instead ...
Given a set , define = {} (the language consisting only of the empty string), =, and define recursively the set + = {:} for each >. If is a formal language, then , the -th power of the set , is a shorthand for the concatenation of set with itself times.
The basic idea is to have a class for each symbol (terminal or nonterminal) in a specialized computer language. The syntax tree of a sentence in the language is an instance of the composite pattern and is used to evaluate (interpret) the sentence for a client. [1]: 243 See also Composite pattern.
The C language statements and expressions typically map well on to sequences of instructions for the target processor, and consequently there is a low run-time demand on system resources – it is fast to execute. With its rich set of operators, the C language can use many of the features of target CPUs.
