WHYY-TV was established in 1957 on channel 35 in Philadelphia as the first educational TV station in the city. Seeking to expand its coverage area, it successfully filed to use channel 12 in Wilmington, which was left vacant after the closing of a commercial station, and moved its primary programming there in 1963.

In early 2008, Mystery! and Masterpiece Theatre were reformatted as Masterpiece. Masterpiece is aired as three different series: Masterpiece Classic, Masterpiece Mystery!, and Masterpiece Contemporary. This lists the titles of the individual miniseries. Some ran for only one episode, many ran for two or more installments.

Father Frank Dowling is a priest with a penchant for solving mysteries. He has to solve the mystery of a young man who's obsessed with finding his natural parents: when the man steps out onto the ledge of a building, threatening to jump unless he's told who his parents are, Father Dowling is called to try and talk him down; unfortunately the man falls, and it looks like he may have been murdered.
