In 2019 the New York Racing Association with the influx of racino dollars created a new racing series for three-year-old fillies called the Turf Tiara. The Jockey Club Oaks Invitational Stakes was positioned as the third and last leg of the new three race series held over the long distance of 1 + 3 ⁄ 8 miles with an impressive purse of US$700,000.
The Derby is held annually on the first Saturday in May, at the end of the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. It is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds at a distance of 1 + 1 ⁄ 4 miles (2.0 km), and has been run at Churchill Downs racetrack since its inception in 1875.

The event was not held 2020 during Keeneland's spring meeting which was moved to July and shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. [8]
The following year the track renamed the event in honor of Risen Star to the Risen Star Stakes. In 1991 the distance of the event was increased to 1 + 1 ⁄ 16 miles [3] and in 2002 the American Graded Stakes Committee upgraded the race to Grade III. [3] The event was upgraded once more in 2010 to Grade II. [4]
