Hoover Dam, in Blendon Township, near Westerville, Ohio, dams the Big Walnut Creek to form the Hoover Memorial Reservoir. This reservoir is a major water source for the city of Columbus, Ohio . It holds 20.8 billion US gallons (79,000,000 m 3 ) of water and has a surface area of 3,272 acres (13.24 km 2 ), or about five square miles.
From mid-May 2011 to January 22, 2012, Lake Mead's water elevation increased from 1,095.5 to 1,134.52 feet (333.91 to 345.80 m) after a heavy snowmelt in the Rocky Mountains prompted the release of an extra 3.3 million acre-feet (4,100,000 ML) from Glen Canyon into Lake Mead. Just south of the Hoover Dam on the Nevada side of the canyon is the Sauna Cave. This cave was drilled by miners working on Hoover Dam while it was being constructed. It is a deep cave with calcium carbonate crystals on the walls. [2] At the end of the cave is a hot spring, which causes temperatures in the cave to reach 120 °F (49 °C).
The most popular trail to the Hot Springs begins from a parking area north of US Hwy 93, 4.2 miles east of Hoover Dam. [8] The trail is open most of the year but closed by the National Park Service in the summer due to dangers from extreme heat .

The water emerges from the cliffs at 109 °F (43 °C), and as they collect in the pools, the temperatures range from 98 to 110 °F (37 to 43 °C). [3] Near the first waterfall on the trail is a sand and gravel-bottomed rock pool at 100 °F (38 °C).
