The north shore of Lake Superior is almost entirely underlain by a series of at least 19 lava flows. The Gooseberry River has cut through the flows from the uppermost layer to the lower falls where it flows into Lake Superior. Three distinct layers of lava can be seen from the highway bridge.

The Grand Sable Dunes today form a five-mile-long sand slope that rises from Lake Superior at a 35° angle. The summits of the tallest dunes are as high as 275 feet (85 m) above lake level. Glacial melt during the last major advance/retreat called the Marquette Readvance created the conditions for the formation of the Grand Sable Banks.

The Poplar River Rustic Campground has four sites designed for tents, but two have spurs long enough for RV use. [15] The campground is unusual in that it is located on the edge of a river rather than a lake. Several of the sites have access directly to the river making it very convenient for trout stream fishing.
