It was founded in 1887 as Troy State Normal School within the Alabama State University System, and is now the flagship university of the Troy University System. WTSU started broadcasting on March 1, 1977, as the state's third public radio station (the callsign stands for the university's name then, "Troy State University," [5] a part of the Alabama higher education system), and the first south of Birmingham. The station was assigned the call sign "WTSU" by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). [6]
Troy University at Dothan is a satellite campus of Troy University and is located in Dothan, Alabama. The campus has its roots in extension courses offered at Fort Rucker, Alabama in the 1950s. A separate Troy State College teaching center was established at Fort Rucker in the 1960s, which led to the creation of the present-day Dothan Campus.
