The Arlington Million is a Grade 1 flat horse race in the United States for thoroughbred horses aged three years and upward on turf. It was originally raced at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Illinois over a distance of 1 + 1 ⁄ 4 miles. [1] The Arlington Million is the first thoroughbred race to offer a purse of US$1,000,000.
Arlington Park (formerly known as Arlington International Racecourse) is a former horse race track in the Chicago suburbs of Arlington Heights, Illinois.Once called the Arlington Park Jockey Club, it was located adjacent to the Illinois Route 53 expressway and serviced by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad.
The Thoroughbred Racing Associations formed in 1942 as the United States' entry into World War II created a potential halt to horse racing in the country, Alfred G. Vanderbilt Jr. began to develop the formation of a commission of racetracks. [2] At the time, Vanderbilt was the president of Pimlico and Belmont Park. [2]
