The Dead End Kids originally appeared in the 1935 play Dead End, dramatized by Sidney Kingsley.When Samuel Goldwyn turned the play into a 1937 film, he recruited the original "kids" from the play—Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Bobby Jordan, Gabriel Dell, Billy Halop, and Bernard Punsly—to appear in the same roles in the film.

Undaunted, Gorcey and Bobby Jordan retooled the series as The Bowery Boys. They recruited Huntz Hall, Gabriel Dell, Billy Benedict, and David Gorcey from The East Side Kids. The Bowery Boys became an exceptionally popular staple of theaters and drive-ins, with the films released quarterly. Forty-eight Bowery Boys features were made.

When Warners released Bobby Jordan from his contract, Universal quickly signed him to join the rest of gang. Now, with five of the original six Dead End Kids on the payroll, Universal revised the billing to read The Dead End Kids and Little Tough Guys. In total, the Little Tough Guys made 12 feature films, and three 12-chapter serials.
The East Side Kids became The Bowery Boys in 1946, and Benedict stayed with the series, as "Whitey", to the end of 1951. Other films included My Little Chickadee (1940) starring W. C. Live Wires is a 1946 film starring the comedy team of The Bowery Boys. [1] It is the first film in the series, which lasted until 1958 and included forty-eight films, after the comedy team of the East Side Kids was revamped and renamed The Bowery Boys.
