The impact factor (IF) or journal impact factor (JIF) of an academic journal is a scientometric index calculated by Clarivate that reflects the yearly mean number of citations of articles published in the last two years in a given journal, as indexed by Clarivate's Web of Science.
While these journals still did not receive an impact factor until the next year, they did contribute citations to the calculation of other journals' impact factors. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] In July 2022, Clarivate announced that journals in the ESCI obtain an impact factor effective from JCR Year 2022 first released in June 2023.
The simplest journal-level metric is the journal impact factor, the average number of citations that articles published by a journal in the previous two years have received in the current year, as calculated by Clarivate. Other companies report similar metrics, such as the CiteScore, based on Scopus.

The values for Nature journals lie well above the expected ca. 1:1 linear dependence because those journals contain a significant fraction of editorials. CiteScore was designed to compete with the two-year JCR impact factor, which is currently the most widely used journal metric. [7] [8] Their main differences are as follows: [9]
The journal is abstracted and indexed in Medline, BIOSIS Previews, [11] Chemical Abstracts Service, [12] Science Citation Index Expanded, [11] and Scopus. [13] According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2023 impact factor of 6.4. [14] The journal opposes the over-reliance on the impact factor by the scientific community. [15]

As of 2024, PLOS publishes 14 academic journals, [2] including 7 journals indexed within the Science Citation Index Expanded, and consequently 7 journals ranked with an impact factor. PLOS journals are included in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
