The Ford 385 engine family (also called "Lima" [2]) is a series of "big block" overhead valve (OHV) V8 engines designed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company. The family derives its 385 name from the 3.85-inch (98 mm) stroke of the 460 cubic-inch V8 introduced in 1968. [ 3 ]
This engine was fitted with hydraulic lifters and a four-barrel Carter AFB carburetor. The factory opened in 1957 as the site of production of Ford's MEL V8 for the Edsel car.. It subsequently produced six-cylinder engines (the 170/200/250 family), the 385-series 370/429/460 big-block V8 engines, and the 2.3/2.5 L HSC/HSO pushrod four-cylinder engines for the Ford Tempo, Mercury Topaz, and Ford Taurus.
This engine was also produced in Cologne, Germany. It was put in Pintos, Mustangs, Fairmonts and Rangers. It was then modified by Mazda to become the 2.5L in the late 1990s Ranger/U.S. sold Mazda pickups. Ford modified this design further so it is hardly recognizable from pre-2000 (date uncertain) year models. Caution!
Headers are generally made by aftermarket automotive companies, but sometimes can be bought from the high-performance parts department at car dealerships. Generally, most car performance enthusiasts buy aftermarket headers made by companies solely focused on producing reliable, cost-effective, well-designed headers specifically for their cars.
Ford offered a performance head that was a stock part on 1993–1995 Mustang Cobra models and pre-1997 ½ Ford Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers equipped with the 5.0 L engine called the GT-40 head (casting ID F3ZE-AA). In mid-1997, the Explorer and Mountaineer 5.0 L heads were revised and renamed GT40P.

An illustration of several key components in a typical four-stroke engine. For a four-stroke engine, key parts of the engine include the crankshaft (purple), connecting rod (orange), one or more camshafts (red and blue), and valves. For a two-stroke engine, there may simply be an exhaust outlet and fuel inlet instead of a valve system.
