Roy C. Start High School is the largest comprehensive public high school in Toledo, Ohio, United States. The school opened in 1962 and is part of the Toledo Public Schools. It was named after Roy C. Start, two-time mayor of Toledo and founder of the West Toledo YMCA. The school building was demolished and replaced with a new building.
As Toledo continued to grow, so did its school district. Two more high schools were opened in 1962: E.L. Bowsher High School was named for a former TPS superintendent to ease crowding at Libbey, and Roy C. Start High School was named for a former Toledo mayor in order to ease crowding at DeVilbiss. [35]
Roy C. Start (November 3, 1877 – December 15, 1956), born in Holmes Township, Ohio, was the Republican mayor of Toledo from 1936–40. He is the namesake for Roy C. Start High School in Toledo, Ohio. Start also founded the West Toledo YMCA. [1] [2]
