Lyles became the director of the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization in 1996. In May 1999, he was assigned as vice chief of staff at Headquarters U.S. Air Force.
However, a need for an academy in California convinced Major General Curtis D. O’Sullivan to start a program. The school's first graduating class was in 1951. During the next ten years, the program began to expand. However, the school was not called the California Military Academy until 1961, when training officially came under the new academy.

California Military Academy (CMA) was one of several private boys’ military schools in the Los Angeles area from the early to the middle part of the 20th century. CMA was a military school for boys grades Kindergarten through 9th.
