The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) [1] is a public land-grant research university in Los Angeles, California, United States.Its academic roots were established in 1881 as a normal school then known as the southern branch of the California State Normal School which later evolved into San José State University.
The school is located in Bauer Wurster Hall on the southeast corner of the main UC Berkeley campus. It is composed of five departments: the Department of Architecture, the Department of City and Regional Planning, the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning, and the Institute of Urban & Regional Development.
In 1919, the Los Angeles branch of the California State Normal School became the southern branch of the university, which ultimately became the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1950, he was named dean of the UC Berkeley Architecture school. In 1959, he orchestrated the creation of the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design, which brought the three schools of architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning into one organization. He served as its dean until his retirement in 1963 for health reasons.
