The Southeast Asian Games, commonly known as SEA Games is a biennial multi-sport event involving participants from the current 11 countries of Southeast Asia. The games are under the regulation of the Southeast Asian Games Federation with supervision by the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia.
The South East Asian Games is a biennial event which began in 1959 known as the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games. Athletics has been one of the sports held at the Games since the inaugural edition. Records are maintained by the Southeast Asian Games Federation and set by athletes who are representing one of the 11 countries of Southeast Asia.

The games were held at the Queen Sirikit Sports Center, Pathum Thani Province; the tournament format was a single round-robin, the team with the best record winning the gold medal.
