Għarb lies in some of Gozo's most scenic countryside, particularly at Dbieġi, the highest hill on Gozo. Also at Dbieġi is a centre for Gozitan crafts. Within the limits of Għarb is the Chapel of San Dimitri. According to legend, the first chapel was built on the cliff side by a woman whose son was freed from captivity by St. Demetrius.
There are also the Gozo Stadium, the Government Farm, St. Mary's Cemetery, Xewkija Cemetery and an industrial estate which employs hundreds of Gozitan workers. The rising population in Xewkija needed more building sites for houses and housing estates have been developed at Tal-Barmil, Ta' Ġokk and Tal-Ħamrija.
Frenċ tal-Għarb was born on 3 December 1892. He was one of twelve children born to Salvu Mercieca and Angelica. Like most other families in Gozo, Mercieca's family had also a nickname; they were known as "Tas-Sajf", literally meaning "Of Summer". [1] From an early age Frenċ had to work in the fields of his family.

Before this date, the area was known as Ta' Ċangura. [citation needed] Until San Lawrenz was declared a parish in 1893, it formed part of the neighbourhood of Għarb. [citation needed]
Gozo Region (Maltese: Reġjun Għawdex) is one of six regions of Malta. The region includes the islands of Gozo, Comino and several little islets such as Cominotto. The region does not border any other regions, but it is close to the Northern Region. It was created by the Local Councils Act of 1993.
