Fraser Health was created in December 2001 as part of a province-wide restructuring of health authorities by the then-new BC Liberal government of Premier Gordon Campbell. It is the merger of three former health regions: Simon Fraser Health Region (SFHR), South Fraser Health Region, and the Fraser Valley Health Region (FVHR).
The ministry works with five regional health authorities (Fraser Health, Interior Health, Island Health, Northern Health and Vancouver Coastal Health) and one province-wide health authority (the Provincial Health Services Authority), which is responsible for specialized health services. [2]
Burnaby Hospital, (formerly known as Burnaby General Hospital) is a healthcare facility located in Burnaby, British Columbia, and operated by the Fraser Health Authority (FHA). One of the largest hospitals outside the City of Vancouver, it serves the communities of Burnaby and East Vancouver. [1]
Surrey Memorial Hospital began operations in early 1959 and officially opened on 31 January. It is one of twelve hospitals under the jurisdiction of the Fraser Health Authority, which provides health services to more than 1.8 million people. Surrey Memorial is the second-largest hospital in British Columbia and has the busiest emergency department.
The annual operating budget for Delta Hospital is $43.2 million, an increase of 72 per cent since 2004/05 when the budget was $25.1 million. Fraser Health also funds $55 million in public health, mental health, home care, residential care, assisted living and hospice services in Delta community. [3]
