The Catholic parish dates back to 1797 when a small church was built for the emerging Catholic population which lived in the high ground above Belfast. [ 1 ] Within decades St Joseph's Church was contsructed and became a critically important focal point for the development of the Catholic faith in the emerging city of Belfast.
It is Ireland's smallest diocese by population and territory with a declining number of clergy and, in recognition of this, in Feb 2022 the Vatican united the diocese in personi episcopi with Michael Duignan serving simultaneously as Bishop of Clonfert and of Roman Catholic Diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora.

The Church of St. Joseph's, which is in the middle of the village, was built c. 1875. [6] [7] The primary school was originally in Brackloon to the west, but this school closed in June 1965. [8] A new school, St. Joseph's National School, was opened on the east side of the village after this. [9]
Kildress (from Irish Cill Dreasa 'church of the brambles') [1] is a village and civil parish on the outskirts of Cookstown in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. There are two churches in the area. One is St. Patrick's Church of Ireland and the other is St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Killeenan. St. Patrick's Church was built in 1818. [2]
St Joseph's Industrial School, Ireland's second largest industrial school, was opened in Glin by the Christian Brothers in 1928. It closed in 1966. It closed in 1966. In March 2015, a monument to residents and survivors of abuse at this residential institution was erected in the town's heritage park. [ 8 ]
St Joseph's Christian Brothers' School, Fairview was founded in 1888. [6] It was originally a training school where Christian Brothers learned to teach before moving on to other schools. At this time, it contained only three classrooms and taught junior classes. In 1890, one of the classes was given over to Intermediate Cert level. Br.
In March 2023, St. Joseph's Grammar School won the All-Ireland Paddy Drummond Cup, a Gaelic football schools competition, for the first time in their history. They defeated The Abbey School from County Tipperary in the final, with the final score being 2-12 (18) - 0-09 (9).
