At the beginning of the second Doctor Who TV series that debuted in 2005, it was established that the Daleks had engaged in a Time War against the Time Lords that affected much of the universe and altered parts of history. In the programme's narrative, the planet Skaro suffered a thousand-year war between two societies: the Kaleds and the Thals.
The Daleks were designed by Raymond Cusick, and underwent several iterations, while the Dalek voices were achieved using a ring modulator. The serial premiered with seven million viewers, and audiences grew as news about the Daleks spread; the show's overall audience increased by 50% after the final episode.
Moffat and Gatiss wanted the new Daleks to be very colourful, similar to the Daleks of films from the 60s. [6] [13] Gatiss originally wanted there to be a green Dalek, but he decided that green "just doesn't seem to work somehow". [13] Nick Briggs, who voiced the Daleks, planned to counter their bright colours with a more vicious voice. [9]
