The GLJHL switched from USA Hockey to the Amateur Athletic Union and eight of its teams refused to go with it. The eight Great Lakes Division teams formed their own division in the MnJHL while the original teams compete in the Minnesota Division. In 2017 the Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake (MAML) Moose hockey team made a surprise run in the Class A state championship game. The Moose became the first unseeded team to beat the two seed in the quarterfinals defeating Delano 3-2. In the semi-finals the Moose defeated Northfield 3-2 to advance to the schools first ever championship game.

In late 2016, the United States Premier Hockey League, an organization composed of several USA Hockey Tier III Junior as well as many youth hockey leagues, applied for a Tier II league. The Tier II status was denied in December 2016 but the USPHL moved forward with the new league anyway, creating the National Collegiate Development Conference.
