The song was written by Andrew Farriss and Desmond Child, [2] and was a tribute to Michael Hutchence, one of INXS' founders, who committed accidental suicide in 1997.In singing the song, J.D. Fortune, winner of Rock Star: INXS, described his role in Hutchence's legacy—his "afterglow".
Michael Kelland John Hutchence (22 January 1960 – 22 November 1997) was an Australian singer and songwriter. He was the co-founder, lead singer, and lyricist of the rock band INXS from 1977 until his death in 1997.
Afterglow is a 1997 American comedy-drama film directed and written by Alan Rudolph and starring Nick Nolte, Julie Christie, Lara Flynn Boyle and Jonny Lee Miller. It was produced by Robert Altman and filmed in Montreal. Christie's performance earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. [1]
In 2005, INXS launched a reality TV show, Rock Star: INXS, a worldwide search for a new lead singer. While all of INXS knew it would be impossible to replace Michael Hutchence, who died in 1997, they wished to carry on bringing their music to the world. In 2016, Farriss was inducted into the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame. [7]

The B-sides on the first CD single included INXS's biggest hit "Need You Tonight", a 1995 mix of "Original Sin" by Chris & James and a remix of album track "I'm Only Looking" from Full Moon, Dirty Hearts by David Morales. The second CD single included three remixes of "Elegantly Wasted" by dance artists Shagsonic and G-Force.
