The Doge of Genoa (/ d oʊ dʒ / DOHJ) [a] was the head of state of the Republic of Genoa, a city-state and soon afterwards a maritime republic, from 1339 until the state's extinction in 1797. Originally elected for life, after 1528 the Doges were elected for terms of two years. [ 1 ]

Lorenzo Sauli (1535 in Genoa – 1601 in Genoa) was the 82nd Doge of the Republic of Genoa.. During his dogate Sauli had to face firsthand the issue related to the Marquisate of Finale, a small western Ligurian state linked to the Del Carretto family, and always in the expansionist aims of Genoa for its strategic and economic importance.
His dogal mandate was marked by the opening in Genoa of the new Via Giulia (today's Via XX Settembre) and the prohibition of the "seminary game", linked to the extraction of the senators of the Republic. After the biennium ended on 4 July 1644, no further details of Giovanni Battista Lercari's post-dogato life are known. He died in Genoa in 1657.
During his mandate as Doge. Grimaldi promoted two public works for the Genoese city and the readjustment of the donkey-back water conduit for the supply of the republican capital. He ended the dogate on January 22, 1730, but would continue to serve the republic in other state jobs. Grimaldi died in Genoa in 1750.

The humanist poet Petrarch wrote letters to the people of Genoa and to the doge of Venice appealing to them to end their fratricidal wars and find a common aim. These letters were among Verdi's inspirations for the revision of the opera in 1881.
