The Fremont school system was established in the 1850s with the construction of a plank school in the center of town. [2] This soon proved inadequate, and another school was established between Fremont and nearby Elm Corners in 1865. In 1876, Fremont built a brick school at the site of the present structure, and enlarged it in 1888.
A group of settlers led by Daniel Weaver first settled the area in 1855, with the Weaver homestead serving as the first post office and public school. In November 1855, Fremont Township was established and named in honor of John C. Frémont , [ 5 ] western explorer and Republican Party candidate for United States President.

The City of Fremont is located partially within the township and is the only incorporated municipality. Dayton Center is an unincorporated community located just a few miles north and west of Fremont at 43°30′38″N 85°58′48″W / 43.51056°N 85.98000°W / 43.51056; -85.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 33.2 square miles (86 km 2), of which 33.2 square miles (86 km 2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km 2) (0.06%) is water. Sheridan Township borders the southern end of Fremont Lake, just south of Fremont.
