The bronze sculpture measures approximately 20 feet (6.1 m) x 20 feet (6.1 m) x 9 feet (2.7 m), and is set on a gray granite arch fabricated by Frank Teich that measures approximately 25 feet (7.6 m) x 18 feet (5.5 m) x 9 feet (2.7 m) with a Lone Star on its keystone. It is administered by the City of Houston's Municipal Arts Commission.

Horsehead Crossing is a ford on the Pecos River in Crane County, south of Odessa, Texas. [1] Historically, it was a major landmark on the trail west as one of a few fordable sections of the Pecos in West Texas, and as the first reliable source of water for about 75 miles on the route from the east.
