Oman TV (Arabic: تلفزيون سلطنة عمان) is the national television channel broadcaster in the Sultanate of Oman. The channel began broadcasting from the city of Muscat on 17 November 1974, using Intelsat, [1] and from Salalah on 25 November 1975. [2] Since 1997, Oman TV has broadcast its programs through its website.
Oman TV channels are controlled and regulated by the government through the Ministry of Information. Criticisms of the government, or the Sultan, are not taken lightly. In 2004, two Omani intellectuals called the government reforms a way to improve the image of Oman across the globe, on a program on the Iranian TV channel Al-Alam. [6]
There were six free-to-air channels headquartered in Oman at the end of 2011, four of these privately owned. Only 7% of households have access to Pay television. [1] A reform in 2004 ended the state’s monopoly on television broadcasting. The first independent TV station Majan TV launched in 2009. In 2011, Jai Hind TV was launched in Oman. [1]
