St. Barnabas has been an Anglo-Catholic parish in the Anglican Communion since its inception in 1889 in Stewarton. [1]The church, which opened in 1931, was designed by architect Colin M. Drewitt in a combination of Byzantine style and Romanesque style.

The first Catholic church in Houston, St. Vincent's Church, opened in 1839. [6] John Odin, a bishop arrived in 1841 to help establish it, and in the fall of 1842 the building, in the Second Ward, was fully built. This church converted into a parish catering to German Americans in 1871 when the larger Annunciation Church opened. [7]

The new diocese was formed by eight congregations, St. Barnabas , St. Paul's , St. Brendan's , St. Charles , St. Stephen's , St. Ursula's , and Trinity , with a new church, Resurrection, being started at Fircrest, near Tacoma in Western Washington. The Diocese of Cascadia first Synod took place on March 7, 2009, in St. Barnabas Anglican Church.
The original pews were made by local workers, but in 1939, St John's Church, Micklegate closed, and its pews were moved to St Barnabas. All but four of the pews were sold off in 2023, to make the church a more flexible space. [2] [3] The church is built of red brick, and consists of a nave with aisles and a chancel.
