There is actually debate on this because the wording is vague. In general, if the hold says ends on 7-22, the carrier will deliver it on 7-22. Having said that, the carrier will need to be informed via a paper printed by the supervisor that changes your date from 7-24 to 7-22. The online wording is wrong. Ok, so how it works is the carrier is notified of the request and makes a card showing the mail should be held for a specific address. The card will show if the resident is going to pick it up from the station or a date for redelivery. At the carriers case (work station) they have an area where all held mail is set aside.

Leave a note in the box saying “hold mail” and the dates. If you’re worried about burglars opening the box and seeing the note and breaking in, just add “covid positive” on the note. If you're the type of person to order packages whilst out if town, that might be a possible reason.

What actually happens - a paper sheet is printed showing the hold dates and handed to the normal carrier. Most times that carrier will mark the case as to the hold and put a bin under the case to hold the mail. If packages are handed off to someone else, they're delivered. Free services from USPS have virtually no support within the system.
