The district's boundaries run from roughly from Great Island Road and Main Street in the west, including properties along the two main roads and some adjacent streets, to Norse Pines Drive and Quaker Meetinghouse Road in the east. The oldest buildings in the district are the Allyn House (2730 Main Street), built in the late 1600s, and the Old Jail, built c. 1690. The Old Jail is the oldest wooden jail in the United States and is now part of a museum complex, including the Old Customshouse. The jail and the customs house are also separately listed on the National Register.

Sandwich is a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States and is the oldest town on Cape Cod. The town motto is Post tot Naufracia Portus , "after so many shipwrecks, a haven". [ 1 ] The population was 20,259 at the 2020 census.
The original 54-acre (22 ha) district was visually centered on Sandwich Town Hall, Shawme Pond, and the reconstructed Dexter Grist Mill. [2] When first listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, it was roughly bounded by Main, Grove, Water Sts., and Tupper Rd. from Beale Ave. to MA 6A. [1]
Sandwich village is located in the northwestern part of the town of Sandwich at (41.75891, -70.500174 It is bordered to the north by Massachusetts Route 6A and the Cape Cod Canal, to the northeast by Cape Cod Bay, to the east by the Dock Creek saltmarsh and the CDP of East Sandwich, to the south by U.S. Route 6 (the Mid-Cape Highway), and to the west by the town of Bourne.
Route 130 begins in the Santuit section of Barnstable at Route 28 and enters Mashpee 0.2-mile (0.32 km) from the terminus and travels on a north–south path through Sandwich. The highway runs through the village of Forestdale in the southern section of the town.
