Today, Red Cliff is the site of a fish hatchery run by the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Red Cliff also runs Legendary Waters Resort and Casino, which sits on the shore of Lake Superior. The band has also taken control of the reservation's Head Start program, and offers an Ojibwe language immersion program for young children.

This area was historically the territory of the L'Anse Band of the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Indians, a large, decentralized group of loosely associated bands around southern Lake Superior. The European-American community of L'Anse developed around a French fur trading post set up in colonial times at the site of an Ojibwa village on the bay.
Its twelve bands were located throughout Michigan and the Upper Midwest. Since the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 , members of the former Ontonagon Band have been included as part of the federally recognized Keweenaw Bay Indian Community , successor apparent to this and the Ojibwe (as the Chippewa are known) of the former L'Anse Band.

The Lac Vieux Desert Band independently joined the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan, Inc. in 1988. It was formed in 1966 to represent tribes in Michigan, share management resources, and gain funding through joint programs. As the tribes have grown and developed more of their own programs, the council has transferred functions to them.
Chief Buffalo was granted a tract for his family on the mainland just west of Madeline Island, in what is now known as the Red Cliff Indian Reservation. [10] On the eastern end of the island is an exclave of the Bad River Indian Reservation of approximately 195 acres (0.79 km 2).
