The thoracic spinal nerve 12 (T12) is a spinal nerve of the thoracic segment. [1] It originates from the spinal column from below the thoracic vertebra 12 (T12). It may also be known as the subcostal nerve.
The subcostal nerve (anterior division of the twelfth thoracic nerve [1]) is a mixed motor and sensory nerve contributing to the lumbar plexus. It runs along the lower border of the twelfth rib , often gives a communicating branch to the first lumbar nerve , and passes under the lateral lumbocostal arch .
There are usually 21 denticulate ligaments on each side, with the uppermost pair occurring just below the foramen magnum, and the lowest pair occurring between spinal nerve roots of T12 and L1. [1] The denticulate ligaments are traditionally believed to provide stability for the spinal cord against motion within the vertebral column. [citation ...
It is formed by the divisions of the first four lumbar nerves (L1-L4) and from contributions of the subcostal nerve (T12), which is the last thoracic nerve. Additionally, the ventral rami of the fourth lumbar nerve pass communicating branches, the lumbosacral trunk, to the sacral plexus. The nerves of the lumbar plexus pass in front of the hip ...
Spinal nerve Typical spinal nerve location. Each spinal nerve is a mixed nerve, formed from the combination of nerve root fibers from its dorsal and ventral roots. The dorsal root is the afferent sensory root and carries sensory information to the brain. The ventral root is the efferent motor root and carries motor information from the brain.
The medial cutaneous branches of the posterior divisions of the thoracic nerves descend for some distance close to the spinous processes before reaching the skin, while the lateral branches travel downward for a considerable distance—it may be as much as the breadth of four ribs—before they become superficial; the branch from the twelfth thoracic, for instance, reaches the skin only a ...
The intervertebral foramen is small, and circular, with two at each intervertebral level, one for the right and one for the left exiting nerve roots. The vertebral foramen is the large opening posterior to the vertebral body also known as the spinal canal. It contains and protects the spinal cord at the thoracic level.
The lesser splanchnic nerve modulates the activity of the enteric nervous system of the midgut. Least splanchnic nerve [1] [2] T12 [1] T12–L2 T11–T12 [6] The least splanchnic nerve travels into the abdomen medial to the sympathetic trunk. [6] Its fibers synapse in the renal plexus. [4] [6]
