Pterophyllum scalare, most commonly referred to as angelfish or freshwater angelfish, is the most common species of Pterophyllum kept in captivity. It is native to the Amazon Basin in Peru , Colombia , and Brazil .
The freshwater angelfish (P. scalare) was described in 1824 by F. Schultze. Pterophyllum is derived from the Greek πτερον, pteron (fin/sail) and φυλλον, phyllon (leaf). In 1906, J. Pellegrin described P. altum. In 1963, P. leopoldi was described by J. P. Gosse. Undescribed species may still exist in the Amazon Basin.

The royal angelfish is widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific. [4] The species can be found in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean around East Africa and the Maldives, stretching to the Tuamoto Islands, New Caledonia, and Great Barrier Reef. [2]

The king angelfish conservation status is deemed least concern by the IUCN red list. [12] However, the Conservation Regulation of Mexico granted the status of special protection to the king angelfish in 1996 due to overfishing, thus the harvest of this fish was limited and caused two fisheries in the Gulf of California to close in the early 2000s.
