The Quitman Historic District is a 417-acre (169 ha) historic district located in Quitman, Georgia.It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. [1]The district contains late 19th and early 20th century brick buildings in the commercial district and mainly wood-frame homes from various periods and styles in the residential area.
Quitman is located in southern Georgia at U.S. Routes 84 and 221 pass through the center of the city. US 84 leads west 121 miles to Dothan, Alabama , while US 221 leads south 24 miles (39 km) to Greenville, Florida , and 26 miles (42 km) to Interstate 10 .

The area that was to become Brooks County was first opened up to European-American settlement in 1818 when Irwin County was established. Coffee Road was built through the region in the 1820s. Lowndes County's first court session was held at the tavern owned by Sion Hall on the Coffee Road, near what is now Morven, Georgia in Brooks County.
